Alberta Group Director Liz Barbaro Sant, who has recently been made Chairperson of TradeMalta, has announced that the fire, safety and security company will be among the first on the island to offer paid leave to employees dealing with the loss of a pregnancy.

“As part of our mental health drive, we are proud to be one of the first companies to offer paid leave for our team members who are affected by the loss of a pregnancy,” shared Ms Barbaro Sant in a social media post announcing the newly adopted policy.

“We realised that people have wanted for a long time for more understanding and recognition of the impact of miscarriage,” the Director continues, adding that “the policy will also apply to partners in recognition of the fact that pregnancy loss does not only affect women.”

Paid leave after miscarriage has been a topic of debate in several countries, with New Zealand making headlines earlier this year after it unanimously approved a bill giving parents three days of bereavement leave after a miscarriage or stillbirth. In Malta, as it stands, it is not common policy for companies to offer it.

Sending a powerful message, Ms Barbaro Sant encourages other companies to adopt similar compassionate policies.
