Companies in Malta can now benefit from LoRaWAN (long range wide area network) connectivity through Melita.io’s dedicated portal.

Melita.io, which is dedicated to delivering Machine to Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) services, had first rolled out a LoRaWAN based IoT network in Germany. This service seeks to enable connectivity between a large number of devices.

“The number of networked devices continues to grow exponentially, and many industrial processes now rely on sensors which communicate with each other to ensure accurate and efficient production,” Melita CEO, Harald Roesch, said.

Companies making use of LoRaWAN technology can now use the melita.io portal to manage SIM-based IoT applications.

“Melita.io has already built a significant Internet of Things business using LoRaWAN technology in Germany across multiple sectors, an experience of which Maltese companies can now benefit from,” Mr Roesch added.

LoRaWAN has similar characteristics to Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) technology. The former’s signal can penetrate deep underground or into buildings all whilst consuming very little energy.

Melita.io deployed NB-Iot across the Maltese islands back in 2019. Now, LoRaWAN is being added as an alternative technology as for certain applications, many sensors can benefit from this type of connectivity.

In practice, LoRaWAN can for example help the agriculture sector, wherein sensors in the ground help to save up to 30 percent of water whilst increasing the crop yield by letting farmers optimise their practices based on the data collected by their sensors.
